Google set to topple Facebook?

Google set to topple Facebook?

Google does several things astoundingly well, including search hosting, email and online video via Youtube. But social networking, despite attempts like Orkut and Buzz, elude the internet giant. At the same time, Facebook has topped 500 million users, many of which probably consider the site to be THE internet for them.

Google isn't ceding the internet to Facebook just yet. Rumour has it they're working on a "Facebook killer", starting with approaching Facebook game titans like Zynga, Playfish and Playdom and getting them to come onto their as yet unnamed network. Previous rumours also indicated Google would call the service Google Me, though there's been no confirmation of the name.

In fact, Google CEO Eric Schmidt isn't about to confirm any plans for a Google social network, he even goes so far as to say that no one wants more of the same in the social space.

But given Google's reach, tools, and brainpower, it seems unlikely that the search giant won't roll out SOMETHING to take on Facebook. It just remains to be seen on what that maybe.

Who's Watching the Olympics on TV?

By Leila Pejman on Feb 19, 2010 at 9:56 AM

Who's Watching the Olympics on TV?

I was shocked to hear FOX's American Idol beat NBC's Olympics coverage, in the ratings race, by over three million people. It begs the question -  are people abandoning TV in favour of getting their Olympics fix via the web?

People's ready adoption of web sport coverage was apparent during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing when Yahoo! Sports attracted more than 38.5 million people during August. The search engine beat NBColympics.com (the official broadcaster of the Games) by 15 million unique visitors.

No wonder then that broadcasters and news organizations have expanded their online presence to compete for valuable online viewers.

An Opera on Twitter

An Opera on Twitter

Admittedly, I'm no opera buff, but the idea of helping to compose an opera by submitting a few Tweets makes opera awesome!

The Royal Opera House of London has invited members of the public to send in their messages of 140 charachters or less via the popular Twitter platform to be used in the composition of a new opera.

Social Media Influencing Panasonic's New Camera Line?

Facebook was one of the first social media sites to feature picture tagging allowing users to share photos and let their friends know who is in them. Simple genius.

Recently, I had a chance to check out Panasonic's new line of cameras for fall of 2009 and sure enough, select versions of the Lumix line now feature Face Recgnition - an excellent feature that reinforces the connection between social media and its influence on consumer electronics.
