Recycling old gear for charity and profit
By Warren Frey on Jun 3, 2010 at 6:30 AM
One of the unintended consequences of the technological revolution we're living through is the accumulation of gadget after gadget. We're choking on high-tech junk, and we need solutions. Plus, it's Canadian Environmental Week until June 5th, so let's think green.
Fortunately, there are a couple of ways out of this modern conundrum, one of which makes you feel good about yourself, and one of which will actually make you some money.
Free Geek is as much a movement as it is a charity, but for your purposes it's a way for you to unload obsolete tech, you can't do much better. Free Geek takes your tech off your hands, refurbishes it, and puts it to work in community centres, schools, and other institutions where it can do some good. What they can't use they recycle using the toughest standards possible to keep the toxic waste lurking in your gadgets out of landfills.

Virtually at the Real Event - Earth Week Series
By Claire Dumican on Apr 20, 2010 at 11:40 AM
Virtual conference attendance has boomed in recent years, but the trade show remains a maligned event in virtual-limbo. Later this year AutoWeek will stage what it said is the world's first virtual green car show.
Replacing this physical show with a virtual event will “eliminate about 3,300 tonnes of carbon emissions and save 17,000 trees," said Tony Foster from Autoweek. Great news for the environment, but what about the cost. On average it costs around seven figure for a company to be at a major auto show, but the virtual event planned by Autoweek looks like being around $30,000 per exhibitor.
There is some debate over whether an event that relies so much on the physical experience; feeling the leather, hearing the roar of the engine etc, will translate to a virtual event. However, there is no debate that economics and practicality have a big part to play in the move to virtual.
