Move over iPhone 4, Samsung is making a splash with its new operating system, bada
Jul 13, 2010

Consumer Reports stated on Monday that they won't recommend Apple's iPhone 4 (warning consumers about the problems with reception). Here's another touchscreen smartphone to consider — the Samsung Wave S8500. It's the first phone to use the bada ("bah-dah") operating system, which is made by Samsung. And it's finally available in Canada. (Side note: Bada means ocean in Korean.)
The S8500 includes a 3.3" 16M-color Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution and scratch-resistant glass surface. The AMOLED screen technology provides user with better outdoor visibility (ie: reduces the sun glare), offers higher picture clarity and at the same time reduces power consumption. This smartphone offers a 5 megapixel camera, HP Video (720p) for playing and recording. Other features include: video calling, built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth3.0, and a microSD slot for up to 32GB of additional storage.
A4 - Hit! You've sunk my Battleship, Apple!
By Paul Gill on Jun 9, 2010 at 1:17 PM
When Apple talks about their new pretty shiny bits of tech they unleash on the world, they tend to not talk about the RAM, CPU, or any of that geeky stuff but stick to the emotion and moments that using technology can give you... the video chatting with the deaf people, the access to your precious photos and music anywhere. Aaaah.
Well, Apple does have some fantastic tech going on under the hood that is worth a look. With the iPhone 4 they’ve added the iPad's A4 chip which is their own creation. It sounds like a place you'd put your boat in a game of Battleship, but this letter and number signify a system-on-a-chip (or SOC) design that Apple have designed in-house.
This little sucker is much faster than the iPhone 3GS which ran at 600MHz. The A4 runs at 1GHz, and has a GPU as well as a CPU. This is one of 3 layers on the A4, the other 2 layers contain the RAM of which at least on the iPad iteration of the A4 there are two 128MB sticks. Why separate layers? So Apple can change up the RAM later on.

This week is the week of the Mobile World Congress, so as expected a lot of big things happening with the mobile industry. For one, Microsoft has finally unveiled its heavily delayed new mobile platform with a rather confusing name - Windows Phone 7 Series. (Seriously, why not just call it Windows Mobile 7?) And let's not forget Samsung's Bada OS that came to light not too long ago, and no one had much information on just a few days ago. Now, there are already videos of both of their prototypes in action. Videos after the break.
Samsung Joins the Mobile OS Game
By Kevin Lau on Feb 11, 2010 at 5:35 PM
Bada, which means "ocean" in Korean, was first announced in November 2009. Samsung is going to kick Symbian aside on their new mid-to-low end devices in favor of Bada as early as late March (When they will be available to Canadians is a separate matter).
Bada handsets will be 3G enabled, with Wi-Fi, GPS and multitouch screens. Bada will also release an SDK, enabling developers and operators to create and customize for it.
Details on Bada at the moment are extremely vague - all we know is that it will offer "flash control, web control, motion sensing, fine-tuned vibration control, and face detection. Also, it supports sensor-based, context-aware applications. By using various sensors such as accelerometers, tilt, weather, proximity, and activity sensors, application developers can easily implement context-aware interactive applications"
