Cisco Cius, the Business Tablet

Cisco Cius is the latest competitor for Apple’s iPad and it looks like a true contender.

Cisco launched Cius yesterday, a first-of-its-kind mobile collaboration business tablet. At just 1.15lbs, the seven-inch high-resolution touchscreen has a battery life of eight hours and is packed with features that make business computing easy.

Part 1: Invite the 'Normals' into Computing

The basis of a potential tablet paradigm shift comes from the mobile computing revolution triggered by the iPhone several years ago. Just have a look on YouTube at all the 2-3 year old children using iPhones or Android phones as they can get around the interface even easier than a computer. There's no learning to type, just pick up the device and touch it, simple. But what brought us from desktops to tablets, is it via iPhone? Visually, we've been seeing the idea of tablets all along. As paper, slabs of stone, or in science fiction.

Invite the 'Normals' into Computing

*This is the first of a five part series on tablet computing

If anyone has even glanced at the tech news websites or the Apple hype machine you’ll see one prevalent word: tablets. Most of the big players including HP, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Apple and others either have tablets in stores or have them planned for later this calendar year. Some smaller companies are making a push to market with a tablet device, such as Fusion Garage’s JooJoo. So why all the fuss about tablet computing all of a sudden? Are these things essentially just big touchscreen phones after all? And why not just use a netbook or laptop instead? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, some would retort.

Well, some would argue that computers are, by nature, broken already in terms of interface and accessibility. It could even be argued that the iPhone / iPod Touch and touchscreen smartphones  are simply just small tablets with a phone built-in, and we’re more ready for tablet computing than we think.

Google and RIM to Each Release a Tablet

It looks like Google and Research In Motion [RIM] will each enter the tablet computer market and compete along side with Apple's iPad.

According to The Wall Street Journal, it has been confirmed that Google and Verizon Wireless have teamed-up to create a tablet that will primarily use Google services. No more details were released but the Google tablet may put up a good fight with Apple, especially when the Nexus One Smartphone is gaining popularity.

What Do We Think of the iPad?

What Do We Think of the iPad?

There has been a lot hype and speculation surrounding the Apple tablet for months leading up to its launch, but is the Apple iPad the device that everyone was expecting it to be? The device that would change the mobile computing landscape as we know it?

Turns out, it is neither of the above. The iPad, from the information we have now, is nothing more than a giant iPhone, sans a camera, and the ability to make phone calls.

Sure, it's equipped with a 1GHz chip - a significant upgrade from the 512MB chip that the iPhone 3G S sports - but its potential cannot be fully realized since it's stuck with the same iPhone OS, which means you are incapable of doing any multitasking with it and can have only one app open at a time. A few other things that would have made the iPad infinitely better would be an HDMI port, USB ports, and Flash support.

Leaked Apple Tablet News On CNBC

It has been speculated for a while that tomorrow’s big announcement from Apple is going to be the tablet, and it looks like it's all but confirmed by Apple now.

On CNBC today, McGraw-Hill CEO Terry McGraw, confirmed that the Apple tablet is a for sure, and will be launching tomorrow.

He went in to all sorts of detail about tablet including that it would surprisingly be running the iPhone OS rather than the full OS X operating system that would come on your laptop or desktop.

I can't help but think that Apple won't be happy about this little TV interview Mr.McGraw did, as they like to do product releases as a big event, which are sort of an Apple trademark.
