2010 Olympic Games Tech Talk
Feb 15, 2010
This week on GetConnected Radio, we'll be talking all about Olympic Tech:
- Dr. Gerard Lachapelle, Professor of Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary, joins us to talk about a GPS system that he and his team helped create for the Canadian Alpine Ski Team to improve their techniques and line selection during practice runs, which will hopefully increase our gold medal count!
- The Olympic Games not only bring world-class athletes to town, but also world-class identity thieves and fraudsters. Darren Stevens explains how you can protect your credit card and other sensitive banking information from fraud and ultimately help you be in charge of your finances with MySpy.
- Vernon Coutinho from HP talks about how touch screens are being integrated into HP's all-in-one printers, as well as home network, wireless network and even Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to print from virtually any device
- BCIT instructors and students are keeping in touch virtually so that education can continue during the Olympic break that is in effect across many post-secondary schools in Vancouver - Bryan Fair, Educational Technologist at BCIT explains how exactly that is made possible
- 3D without the goofy glasses? Jill Birch, VP of Sheridan College, talk about an interesting game they have set up that utilizes this technology - check it out for yourself at the Olympics Ontario House down by False Creek

I visit Hungary every
I visit Hungary every year(was born there). For the past many years the bank I use there INSTANTLY sends me an SMS every time I make a purchase, or there is any change in my accounts (use my debit card, there is a deposit, etc.) As a matter of fact, I keep a cell phone here just to receive these messages(expenses on the account I have there, interest deposits,etc.). The system is instantaneous, and covers multiple accounts(!) and the cost is not quite one dollar per month.
I see MySpy is also about 20 dollars a year - if it works like the Hungarian system, it is well worth the cost(unfortunately it may not-I don't know).
So,there is nothing new under the sun. And Hungary is far less developed than Canada(technically too)!
Just wanted you to know.
Keep up the good work - I listen every Sat - and like your program.
MySpy Could Have Helped
Today, a new debit card scam was revealed in Windsor, Ontario (see The Windsor Star, Feb 15, 2010). If any of the 120 people ripped off in this incident had been using MySpy, they could have easily contacted the cops and had the guy arrested while he was withdrawing everybody's cash. MySpy, discussed in the radio article here at GetConnected.com, is a digital protection system that protects your finances by delivering details of all account activity to your email or cell phone in near-real-time. See www.my-spy.com for more information and a 30 day free trial.
