Twitter Busts the Myth That it is Just Another Fad

It seems in the last few weeks Twitter has started to gain some legitimacy and prove that it might be more than just another passing fad.
Whether it is news leaking from the turmoil in Iran or the flood of posts about Michael Jackson's passing, it seems like more and more media is turning to Twitter as another form of gaining information.
Something you might have missed on your Twitter feed, Thursday during the Michael Jackson outpour, was a post by MythBusters host Adam Savage. His tweet reading “AT&T is attempting to charge me 11k for a few hours of web surfing in Canada.”
While on vacation last week, in Montreal, Savage used his AT&T data plan to surf the internet sites and check his e-mail. Well according to AT&T he used about 750mb of data, which using their roaming charges, is the equivalent of about $11,000.
Savage called his AT&T rep and was astounded by the cost of the bill and sent out the tweet. Within a short time it was being re-tweeted around the world, and AT&T was the second most popular topic on the micro-blog site, following only Michael Jackson.
AT&T saw this buzz storm, contacted Savage and worked out a deal for him on the data charges. (You can read a full interview between Savage and Philip Ling at CanWest News here).
As Savage points out in the article, it's nice that he was able to get rid of the charges because he has 50,000 followers on Twitter, but its unfortunate that regular people like you and me, wouldn't be so lucky.
Perhaps Twitter is proving its media validity by being the catalyst for changes like this that affect thousands of Canadians.
