Google Announces Business in the Cloud

Earlier this week, Google hosted a Campfire One event, where the company announced a new app store for businesses, known as the Google App Marketplace. All of their current apps like Gmail, Calender, Docs have been customized for businesses, as a result attracting two million companies (and 25 million users) to 'go Google'.

Google believes that businesses should run their apps in the cloud. Here's the dilemma, using multiple business apps requires you to log into multiple websites. This can become a major hassle, generate digital clutter and possibly pose a security threat.  The main goal for the Google App Marketplace is to have all of Google's existing products and apps work together (with all its data and tools) under one cloud. It's also a place for developers to create/design apps.

What's the incentive for developers? Google is offering them access to 25 million users and asking for a one-time fee of $100 and 20% revenue in exchange. Not bad, possibly a good way for developers to make some money. Over 50 partners are in support of the marketplace including Vertical Response, Expensify, and Aviary.

Google App Marketplace targets the business community, however the impact will likely be revolutionary. I've just started using Google Docs and it's the most useful tool. Documents are updated automatically, no need to constantly hit the save button. Everyone is invited to view documents online, so you don't have to constantly email an updated version to the group. If you haven't tried it, I recommend giving it a chance. It's user friendly, organized, and efficient.

From my experience with Google's services, I'm optimistic about the potential Google App Marketplace has for businesses and users.

If you missed the Campfire One event, you can watch it on Google's YouTube Channel.
