Free HD For The Super Bowl

Tomorrow is the Super Bowl, one of the most watched television events every year (almost 100 million people tuned in last year). So you've been tasked with hosting this years Super Bowl party and you have HD right? Wait... you don't? Well not all hope is lost!

First things first, you need a TV that can handle HD content and has a ATSC tuner (most new TVs do), you can look at a Plasma or LCD and pick one of these up at your local big box or electronics store today if you don't have on yet.

Once you have the TV, there's the task of getting a HD signal. It's probably too late to get a cable guy to your house to help you set up a HD cable box, but did you know you can get free HD using an antenna like you did with your old TV and those rabbit ears? Well it's true, and believe it or not, the quality is actually better than what you can get through a HD cable box! Its called Over-The-Air (OTA) HD!

If you have a TV with an ATSC tuner, hook up an antenna and start looking for OTA HD signals. The same big box stores that sell TVs will also have the antennas for sale, and they are pretty reasonably priced.

I tried this at home myself, it took just a little tweaking and I was able to find all my local channels in just a few minutes. This may not work in all areas, but it is worth a try. DigitalHome.ca has a reception forum that you can check out, that will hopefully point you in the right direction. And unlike your old TV with rabbit ears where it would be fuzzy at best, OTA HD is digital, so it either works or it doesn't, so if you can get a signal, it will look incredible!

DigitalHome.ca has a great forum for OTA HD that you can check out here, it covers things like reception, but also what antennas they recommend and other little secrets to getting great OTA HD.

So be a great Super Bowl host and make sure you have HD tomorrow... and don't forget the hot wings!

PS – if you are close enough to the border to our neighbors to the south, you might be able to catch a signal from the states and enjoy the cool commercials that often get cut out here in Canada. Enjoy.
