iiView M1Touch: An iPad Alternative
By Leila Pejman on Jul 27, 2010 at 6:31 AM
Mike got his hands on an iiView M1Touch, another tablet computer on the marketplace, but this one has only been released in Asia (still confirming a launch date in North America). Is it an iPad alternative? Well, it definitely looks like a giant iPhone with an 11 inch screen, but I don't think Apple will be threatened by this new device. iiView is a Hong Kong company founded in 2006 by inventor and businessman Mr. Cyril Alonzo.
The M1Touch runs on Windows 7 Premium and packs an Intel Atom N450 processor. Plus, this device has a 1.3 megapixel camera on its left bezel. You can get this tablet for as low as $499 USD for the 160 GB hard drive model with 1 GB of RAM and WiFi only. Or, splurge a little and get the 250GB hard drive model with 2GB RAM and WiFi for $699.
Leila Meets Techie: Deidra Jones, The Most Inventive App Gal
By Leila Pejman on Jul 25, 2010 at 6:32 AM
Deidra Jones, President of Pocket Cocktails, has been busy creating and developing multi-purpose apps for the past two years. Her apps range from cocktail recipes to how-to-get six-pack abs to teaching your dog new tricks. For just $0.99 per app, you can learn how to make yummy Cosmos and balance it with 60 seconds of ab work. Not a bad combo for two bucks.
What is your techie mission?
To create applications for mainstream users to enjoy. Most of the early adopters for new technology were hard-core tech geeks. But now that has changed with mothers, aunts, and even your grandfathers are adopting and embracing the latest in technology. We aim to create apps that everyday folks can use and enjoy with their friends and families.
Who’s your techie role model
Steve Jobs - CEO of Apple Inc. Certainly he will go down in history as the man who brought apps to mobile. He's been at the forefront of countless milestones of sea change, including the infamous "1984" commercial, the original Macintosh 128K, Pixar, iPod, iPhone and now iPad. Its true genius to give people what they want BEFORE they know what they want.

Flipboard, the Social Magazine for iPad
By Janet Tieu on Jul 22, 2010 at 5:56 PM
The iPad has revolutionized the magazine industry...for the better (don't you think?). Even Condé Nast's magazine Wired reported that the sales of their iPad edition exceeded its print edition.
Now, how about an iPad app that turns your social content into a magazine? Ta-dah, it's called the Flipboard. The online community is raving about this new social magazine app as a MUST on your iPad download list. The best part of it is that it's free (...for now).
Flipboard collects articles from your Twitter and Facebook accounts to create a one-of-a-kind social magazine just for you. For example, all the articles you and your friends 'Like' on Facebook or the re-tweets on Twitter will be compiled into a magazine layout. Each Flipboard account is customizable to the reader's liking. Changes in content will reflect real-time feeds. Flipboard's next mission is to add feeds from Flickr and LinkedIn... stay tuned!
If you're still not sure about Flipboard, here's a promo video.
HMV Launches Online Music Store "HMV Digital"
By Janet Tieu on Jul 6, 2010 at 7:47 PM
After years of decreasing sales, HMV has created an online music store to compete with Apple iTunes and Google Music.
HMVdigital.ca was launched yesterday after seven months of consumer testing and offers MP3s that are CD-quality or better. Purchased songs are 100% digital rights management-free, which mean customers can copy, move, and share songs to their liking.
Albums start at $9.99 CAD and individual songs are $1.29 CAD each. Popular releases, such as Eminem's latest album "Recovery" and Drake's "Thank Me Later" are $13.99 CAD and $9.99 CAD, respectively.
Songs and albums can be bought on the website or use HMV’s Download Manager to organize and sync music directly to their iTunes folder.
It Could All Faceplant Just As Easily
By Paul Gill on Jul 4, 2010 at 1:41 PM
*This is the last of a five part series on tablet computing
Part 1: Invite the 'Normals' into Computing
Part 2: Flintstones and Star Trek Point Us to the New Paper
Part 3: Interface - One hand or two? Touch, Tap, Spin
Part 4: Tablet Computing - Real World Use Cases
There's not always a black and white answer to the question of whether one should go the tablet route or not at this point in time. There are convertible notebooks available as well, which are notebooks with a swivelling keyboard attached on a hinge. It can rotate behind the screen or flip out to a laptop setup as required. There are cons to this as the size and bulk could increase, and the user interface has to really match two different input methodologies.
Starbucks Offers Free Unlimited Wi-Fi and Hotels Should, too
By Janet Tieu on Jul 4, 2010 at 6:03 AM
More and more devices come with Wi-Fi availability, and as a customer, I expect companies and retail spaces to follow suit. Let's face it, we like Wi-Fi devices and we like places that offer free Wi-Fi.
Starbucks used to have a registered time limit for their in-store Wi-Fi, but on July 1, 2010, Starbucks removed their two-hour cap and threw away membership logins. The popular coffee joint now offers unlimited usage of their Wi-Fi and no membership is needed. Bell Canada struck a deal with Starbucks Canada, while AT&T will cater to the java location in the US.
Google vs. Viacom: You win
By Warren Frey on Jul 2, 2010 at 12:04 PM
Google and Viacom squared off earlier this year in a titanic battle that some thought might leave the future of the internet’s biggest video provider in serious doubt. It was something of an ethical quagmire, with early YouTube emails revealing the founders knew copyright infringement was occurring, and more to the point, turned a blind eye to it. What appeared to be an open and shut case was complicated by the fact that Viacom itself was uploading its own copyrighted material, while still claiming Youtube was in the wrong.
