A Leaked Video of the New Blackberry Bold
By Christian Montano on Jul 29, 2010 at 6:12 PM
The much anticipated Blackberry 6 OS is getting more buzz with a leaked video of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 (courtesy of Driphter.com).
RIM is scheduled to hold a press conference next week, likely to announce the new Blackberry model on their new operating system. I guess it'll no longer be a surprise. Makes me wonder if this leaked video has a public relations strategy behind it....inspired by Gizmodo revealing the iPhone 4 before Apple? (I guess we'll never know).
The 9780 hardware is pretty much identical to the 9700, mainly the screen resolution and battery. The real difference is the operating system.

iPhone 4: jailbroken, unlocked and ready for Canada
By Warren Frey on Jul 27, 2010 at 11:41 AM
The Library of Congress has just ruled that jailbreaking your phone — the act of modifying it to run software not approved by the phone’s vendor — is legal, as was previously stated in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This new ruling has the potential to open up new avenues for ambitious U.S. iPhone owners to unlock their phones and get out from under the thumb of both Apple and AT&T, and effectively running whatever they want on the network of their liking.
Now for Canadians, we get the freedom of buying the iPhone 4 unlocked (not jailbroken) through the Apple website, so those willing to spend full price can choose their preferred carrier and go without a contract. Full price is fairly steep; a 16GB iPhone 4 will run $659 while a 32GB model will cost $779. Plus, you can get an unlocked 3G S (8GB model) for $549.
iiView M1Touch: An iPad Alternative
By Leila Pejman on Jul 27, 2010 at 6:31 AM
Mike got his hands on an iiView M1Touch, another tablet computer on the marketplace, but this one has only been released in Asia (still confirming a launch date in North America). Is it an iPad alternative? Well, it definitely looks like a giant iPhone with an 11 inch screen, but I don't think Apple will be threatened by this new device. iiView is a Hong Kong company founded in 2006 by inventor and businessman Mr. Cyril Alonzo.
The M1Touch runs on Windows 7 Premium and packs an Intel Atom N450 processor. Plus, this device has a 1.3 megapixel camera on its left bezel. You can get this tablet for as low as $499 USD for the 160 GB hard drive model with 1 GB of RAM and WiFi only. Or, splurge a little and get the 250GB hard drive model with 2GB RAM and WiFi for $699.
San Francisco is Getting Sued Over Radiation Laws
By Warren Frey on Jul 26, 2010 at 7:26 PM
The City of San Francisco has recently decided that all stores selling any wireless device must display a radiation warning label next to the phone. It must display the phone's SAR (Specific Absorption Rate, an indicator of radiation coming from the phone). CTIA, the body representing the wireless industry in the US, is now suing the city for what they say is misleading to customers because it gives the (possibly false) impression that some phones are safer than others. Needless to say, there are a number of factors to consider besides radiation, such as how much time is spent on the device, whether or not a case is applied, and the way that it's held, etc. The CTIA also says the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is the only body that has the right to decide how such information is disclosed to the public.
This lawsuit might have more to do with the CTIA wanting to keep discussion of radiation levels off the table rather than with any allegiance to the FCC (as the two organizations have clashed in the past). At the same time, the possible harm from cell phone radiation is also up for debate.
Leila Meets Techie: Deidra Jones, The Most Inventive App Gal
By Leila Pejman on Jul 25, 2010 at 6:32 AM
Deidra Jones, President of Pocket Cocktails, has been busy creating and developing multi-purpose apps for the past two years. Her apps range from cocktail recipes to how-to-get six-pack abs to teaching your dog new tricks. For just $0.99 per app, you can learn how to make yummy Cosmos and balance it with 60 seconds of ab work. Not a bad combo for two bucks.
What is your techie mission?
To create applications for mainstream users to enjoy. Most of the early adopters for new technology were hard-core tech geeks. But now that has changed with mothers, aunts, and even your grandfathers are adopting and embracing the latest in technology. We aim to create apps that everyday folks can use and enjoy with their friends and families.
Who’s your techie role model
Steve Jobs - CEO of Apple Inc. Certainly he will go down in history as the man who brought apps to mobile. He's been at the forefront of countless milestones of sea change, including the infamous "1984" commercial, the original Macintosh 128K, Pixar, iPod, iPhone and now iPad. Its true genius to give people what they want BEFORE they know what they want.

Android phones have been known to the tech world as an open platform where users can tweak their phones their liking. Well, if you get the new Motorola Droid X, you may just end up with an expensive paperweight.
People who have attempted to mod their phones have run into problems, and even though you purchased the device, Motorola doesn't want you hacking it. You can learn more at the My Droid World Forums.
For the users who don't plan on modding their phone, the Droid X has some pretty nice specs:

- 24GB storage
- 8-megapixel stills
- 720p HD video

All the "no-modding" talk aside, this is a powerful phone. The Motorola Droid X is now available in the US with Verizon Wireless. No news yet on when it will be available in Canada.

Apple’s “Antennagate” Press Conference
By Warren Frey on Jul 16, 2010 at 2:45 PM
For the past two weeks, the tech world and much of the mainstream media has been working itself into a froth over "Antennagate", otherwise known as the iPhone 4's antenna dropping signal strength when held a certain way.
Today Apple CEO Steve Jobs held a press conference to address the growing PR nightmare of Antennagate, and while he didn't issue anything like a complete "mea culpa", he did say that there is a problem and that Apple is going to offer solutions to its customers.
Apple just rolled out iOS 4.0.1 yesterday, which Jobs claims will give a more accurate indication of true signal strength. Additionally, the company will issue a free case to anyone who bought the phone, and those who already bought a case will receive a refund. Customers who return an undamaged iPhone 4 within 30 days of purchase will receive a full refund.
Jobs also pointed out that this antenna problem was by no means isolated to the iPhone 4. In fact practically any smartphone will exhibit the same behaviour, and Jobs pointed to the small number of iPhone 4 users and a very low rate of returns as indicative of how he saw the problem being blown out of proportion.
Jobs also noted there is a small flaw in the proximity sensor which will also be addressed in the iOS 4.0.1 update. He also noted the white iPhone 4 is due to arrive on July 30th, and both models will be available in Canada at that time.
