Breaking Apple News from WWDC 2009

The big changes from this year's WWDC 2009 conference include an expanded line of MacBook Pro laptops, an updated OSX operating system, the upgraded OS 3.0 for the iPhone and the new iPhone 3GS. Read on for a list of some of the highlights for each of these products.


MacBook Pro

  • The MacBook Pro line has now grown to include 13” laptops in addition to their 15” and 17” models. The whole MacBook Pro lineup all feature the built in seven hour battery, support for up to 8GB of ram and up to 500GB hard drive or 256GB SSD, as well as FireWire 800 on all models
  • They have also lowered the prices; you can get a 13” MacBook Pro starting at $1399 CDN.

OSX 10.6 - Snow Leopard

  • Snow Leopard, the updated version of OSX will bring a whole collection of new features including, an updated QuickTime, Safari 4, support for Exchange data in Mail.
  • Snow Leopard has a 64-bit Operating System with better support for multi-core processors and no RAM limit. It ships in September and you can upgrade your current version of Leopard for only $29 USD (Canadian prices may very)

iPhone OS 3.0

  • iPhone OS 3.0 is the newest version of the Operating System Software for both the iPhone and iPod Touch (not to be confused with the actual phone hand set)
  • iPhone OS 3.0 will be a free upgrade for all iPhone users, and $9.95 USD for iPod Touch users (Canadian prices may very)
  • iPhone OS 3.0 will support copy, cut and paste, as well, landscape mode will work in apps other than Safari.
  • Tethering will be an available feature using the new iPhone OS 3.0 with either a Mac or PC, provided your carrier supports it. Currently 22 carriers in 44 countries will support it, but no word on Rogers here in Canada or AT&T in the US.
  • Auto-fill will be available, to save you the time of filling out web forms, and log in information.
  • Find my iPhone is a new app in OS 3.0, that if you lose your iPhone, you can log in to MobileMe on any browser and it will show you where your phone is. You can also use this app to remotely wipe your iPhone if it is lost or stolen and you don’t think you will be able to retrieve it.
  • TomTom navigation has added real GPS turn-by-turn navigation ability to the iPhone OS 3.0, its like having a TomTom with you all the time. There will also be a TomTom car kit that will allow your iPhone to be mounted on your front windshield like any other GPS, and it will charge your phone as well, assuring you always have a full battery when you arrive at your destination. Price is yet to be announced.

iPhone 3GS

  • The new iPhone handset is called the iPhone 3GS.
  • It has a 3-megapixel camera built-in with tap-to-focus that allows you to decide what it focuses on. This camera also allows the iPhone to function as a video camera - something the iPhone has been lacking when compared to most of its competitors.
  • The iPhone 3GS will also have a built in compass so that your maps can orientate to the actual direction you are facing.
  • Improved battery life will allow up to 9 hours of WiFi internet, and 5 hours of 3G talk time (12 hrs talk on 2G).

The annouced new US$ pricing will be as follows (on a 3 year plan)
iPhone 3G – 8GB - $99 USD (Canadian prices may very)
iPhone 3GS – 16GB - $199 USD (Canadian prices may very)
iPhone 3GS – 32GB - $299 USD (Canadian prices may very)
