This Week's Top 5 Tech Rave

These are my top picks of tech events from around the world this week:

The much anticipated news from Apple; the iPad goes on pre-sale today in the US [Tech Borge]

10 years after the dot.com bubble euphoria, what's the digital landscape like today [Globe Technology]

Fancy owning a saucy URL - Sex.com is up for auction (if you've got 1 million dollars!)  [Guardian]

Google Announces Business in the Cloud

Earlier this week, Google hosted a Campfire One event, where the company announced a new app store for businesses, known as the Google App Marketplace. All of their current apps like Gmail, Calender, Docs have been customized for businesses, as a result attracting two million companies (and 25 million users) to 'go Google'.

Recycle your Old Shirt into a New Outfit for your Computer

Still can't let go of that worn out Bon Jovi t-shirt you bought 10 years ago. Hello Rewind will help turn your favorite tees into a stylish computer sleeve. Now for the inspiring twist, the company's goal is to fight sex trafficking so they hire former sex trade workers to make the stylish conversion happen; cutting out the design, sewing it up with batting, felt and velcro.

It's a super easy process for you. First choose a laptop size (13", 15" or 17"). Hello Rewind mails you a pre-paid envelope to send your chosen t-shirts. Within 4-8 weeks, your computer will have something cool to wear.

Social Networking Site Promotes Movies

The new Alice in Wonderland movie starring Johnny Depp opened nationwide this weekend, and I am very excited to see this film.

On February 20th director, Tim Burton, 'hosted' a virtual preview of the stars, songs and scenes from Alice in Wonderland (My invitation got lost in cyberspace I'm sure! Or it could be that I don't have a MySpace account!).

Fraud Prevention Month - Bank Card Tip

March is Fraud Prevention Month in Canada. The Competition Beueau is the driving force behind bringing awareness to Canadians about how to protect themselves against all forms of fraud.

Recycle Your Old Ikea Lamp

Recycle Your Old Ikea Lamp

Recycling is a hot topic, but we're usually talking about where to send your electical stuff for it to be transformed by someone else. This is a weird but fun idea: Recycle your old Ikea lamp into a media projector, yourself!

Just imagine, at your next party you can entertain your guests retro-style with photos from your trip to Europe or wedding. An Instructables' member (derte84) has provided the quirky five step guide to transforming your Ikea lamp into a projector. See link here.
All you need is an Ikea lamp, tape, and as many slides you'd like to present, and it only takes five minutes to assemble.

So, save some money, be environmental and amaze your guests with a homemade slideshow!

Yahoo! FanCouver is Interactive Fun for the Olympics (Video)

FanCouver is a great spot in the heart of Yaletown Vancouver where you can get free Wi-Fi and indulge in hot chocolate while watching the live Olympic coverage. Yahoo! Canada is behind the interactive location. They have set up lots of cool things to make you feel part of the Olympics.

There's a photo booth that allows you to digitaly accessorize with sports equipment (and feel like an athlete), and you can even play Wii and compete for a chance to win a Wii and Wii Fit Plus!

On our recent visit, Mike Agerbo spoke with Elivis Stojko, Canadian figure skater and two-time Olympic silver medalist. Stojko is one of Yahoo! Canada's Olympic analysts. Listen to what he had to say to GetConnected below:

Olympic Dance Power

Olympic Dance Power

BC Hydro Power Smart Village is powering the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games with fun energy saving attractions and activities.

Located on Dunsmuir the Smart Villiage is open until March 21st. I decided to give it a try!

Here are a couple of things you can expect from energy-saving fun:

Sustainable Dance Floor (aka the Electric Dancefloor) - it's an interactive floor that lights up the more you dance. The more active you are, the more electricity you create. Burn calories and save energy.

Olympics Showcases Eco-friendly Phones

Back in September, Bell Mobility launched the Samsung Reclaim in Canada, an ecologically conscious smartphone. Now that's a mouthful; hopefully the abbreviation, ECS, will catch on quickly.

It's one of many eco-friendly phones the company is promoting at the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung (OR@S) at David Lam Park in Yaletown. The Reclaim is made from 80% recyclable materials and is 100% biodegradable. It's made from corn-based bioplastic, a renewable source; even the packaging for the phone is made from recycled paper.

Bell Ice Cube is the Coolest Tech Spot in Vancouver

For the 2010 Winter Games, you must check out the Bell Ice Cube, a 3,000 square foot fan zone located at Robson & Beatty Street in downtown Vancouver.
