That's right. iPad.
Apple has finally made it official in an unveiling today of the much rumored tablet. Below are some of the highlights we got from today’s presentation.
- The iPad looks and acts just like a giant iPhone/iPod Touch. It features the single home button just like the iPhone and runs the iPhone Operating System
- They are touting it as the middle ground between an iPhone and a laptop that can support "Browsing, Email, Photos, Video, Music, Games, and eBooks"
- It has a large QWERTY keyboard that pops up on the screen, and the tablet can support landscape or portrait mode
- It has built-in iTunes so it will be easy to download music, videos and eBooks to the iPad. It can also run all the apps that you can currently download to your iPhone and iPod Touch.
- It looks like it can handle HD video with out any problems, and Steve Jobs showed a demo of both UP and Star Trek
- From a technical stand point it is 1.5pounds, with a 9.7inch display and comes in a variety of sizes, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. It also has Wireless-N internet connectivity, speaker and microphone, and Bluetooth.
- iWork is available for the iPad, so you can work on and edit documents and spreadsheets right from the tablet
- It will also be available as the iPad 3G with wireless data available. US prices through AT&T will be $14.99/month for 250mb and $29.99/month for unlimited data and the best part is no need to sign a contract! No word yet on Canadian pricing or restrictions but expect something early summer.
- iPad Hardware Pricing (US pricing only - Canadian pricing will most likely be a bit more)
WiFi only version
16GB - $499
32GB - $599
64GB - $699WiFi & 3G version add $130 more to each model to each size
- The WiFi version should start shipping with in 60 days world wide, and 90 days for 3G version
- It also comes with a docking station that features a full sized Apple keyboard. This will make it easy enough to type on if you don't like the touch screen keyboard as much. This is one of those accessories you won't be carrying with you everywhere, but it will be good at home or the office.
One market that I can see really embracing this is parents, it could be a good alternative to the portable DVD player, parents could pass this off to the kids on a road trip and let them enjoy hours of video, music and gaming entertainment in the car.
We'll have more blogs coming soon with what we like and don't like about the iPad coming soon, so stay tuned!
